Mindfulness is about paying attention to the present moment. Its origins lie in Buddhist meditation which is more than 2500 years old, but today it is used as a tool to support us as through our lives as they unfold.
The practice is based on the MBSR programme (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) which was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn 35 years ago at the University of Massachussets Medical School.
Studies show that an 8-week mindfulness meditation programme can benefit your health: 47% reduction in stress, 43% reduction in stress related symptoms and more than a 50% decrease in psychological illnesses (anxiety, depression, hostility and psychosomatic disorder).
This technique emphasises that “we are not our thoughts”, which is to say that we can see them, separate ourselves from them with enough clarity to be aware of what our priorities are and as a result make conscious decisions about our lives. In order to do this, we need to be more present in the world, without making judgements and remembering that, underneath a constant bombardment of thoughts, our minds can be calm, treating ourselves with more compassion, accepting reality for what it is and regaining energy through calmness.
In light of the need to humanise healthcare, steps are being taken to introduce this technique into different hospitals. Doctors and nurses in La Fe Hospital, Valencia and La Paz Hospital, Madrid are being trained as therapists and patients with chronic pain, eating disorders and diabetes are already benefitting from its effects. Our pharmacy is also working towards making this humanization a reality and members of our team are being trained in this technique to give you better healthcare every day.
